Christ in Majesty with Saints

4th or 5th/6th century
Fresco
Euphrasian Basilica, Poreč, Croatia

Three saints holding open books approach Christ, who is seated on a capacious throne and holds a book on his knee. The two saints on the far left and right wear mantles drawn over the head as veils. The other one has a mantle identical to the others except for the colors, but it is not drawn over the head. Perhaps this indicates that the wearer is a male?

The throne, the book on the knee, and the flanking by saints are all common features in Christ in Majesty images of this era, but the flanking saints are usually men.

The photograph was taken in the original basilica. My notes do not record whether this fresco was in the basilica itself (4th-century) or the adjoining baptistery (built in the 5th century and updated in the 6th).
